Join our charity lottery – you could win £25,000

Barnsley Hospital Charity (BHC) operates to raise funds to support patient care here at Barnsley Hospital. In an exciting partnership we launched the BHC-Unity Lottery in June, with one of the UK’s leading charitable lottery providers. There is a high value prize fund each week with £25,000 prize for six matches, £1,000 for five and many small prizes.

Lottery participation costs just £1 per week and you (and your families) can buy as many tickets as you wish, each bearing a unique six digit number.

You can join through monthly direct debit at a cost of £4.34 per month and which you can cancel at any time.

You can also purchase your number(s) in advance with a debit card or by sending a cheque – again you can purchase in months, with three months costing £13, six being £26 and a year costing £52.

As the commitment is between players and the Unity Lottery, we regret that Barnsley Hospital Charity cannot sell tickets or take cash at the hospital and the Unity Lottery cannot facilitate payroll giving at this time.

To join the BHC-Unity Lottery just click on this link: http://www.unitylottery.co.uk/charity/display/Barnsley-Hospital-Charity – it takes less than five minutes to sign up and you will immediately start to raise funds for our charity.

Carol singing for Tiny Hearts Appeal

On Thursday 3 December and Friday 4 December we will have some lovely Carol singers outside main reception at the front of the hospital raising money for our Tiny Hearts Appeal.

Children and young people ages 5 to 15 years from the Jill Brookes School of Dance Musical Theatre Group will be singing a variety of Christmas Carols between 16:00 and 18:00, and will be joined by staff members Kerry Archer and Rebecca Nicholson.

Kerry Archer, organiser of the event says:

We really wanted to do something festive and we decided to raise funds for Tiny Hearts Appeal when the incubator collection started at front of hospital. It’s not only supporting a great cause but it’s also bringing Christmas cheer to people outside the hospital.

If you’d like to show your support and cheer on the singers, or have singalong with them, feel free to pop over and see them. They’ll have a collection tin available to pop your donation in.

Tiny Hearts incubator boosts appeal

Barnsley Hospital has taken on a unique approach to raising money for the Tiny Hearts Appeal. The hospital has installed an incubator to act as an extra large collection tin in the main reception.

The incubator was recently donated by Dragor Medical UK Limited and has been altered and secured by Paul Nicholes, Specialist Medical Engineering Technician at Barnsley Hospital. The incubator is now being used as a visual for the Tiny Hearts Appeal. It aims to raise the profile and encourage patients, visitors and staff to donate to the very special appeal.

The incubator was installed this week and has already received lots of donations from the very generous Barnsley community. Branded signage and a totaliser frames the incubator which is lit up by LED lights to draw attention and raise awareness of the appeal. If you are visiting the hospital, please keep a lookout for the incubator in the main reception.

The Tiny Hearts Appeal is a capital appeal which aims to raise £1 million to support the development of a new special care baby unit, which will be located alongside the Barnsley Birthing Centre at Barnsley Hospital. The brand new building will feature state-of-the-art equipment to enable the Neonatal team to continue their fantastic care and enhance their environment.

Diane Wake, Chief Executive at Barnsley Hospital, said: “We are exceptionally grateful to have received the incubator, this is a big achievement for the appeal. The incubator was installed only a few days ago and we have already received many donations from patients, visitors and staff members.

I think that having the visual aid located on site will really help to raise awareness of this fantastic appeal and I would like to take this opportunity to encourage the generous people of Barnsley continue supporting the appeal and help build a brand new home for Barnsley’s special care babies.”

To find out more about the Tiny Hearts Appeal please visit: https://www.barnsleyhospitalcharity.co.uk/tinyhearts/ or make a donation by texting TINY01 followed by the amount of £1, £2, £3, £4, £5 or £10 to 70070.

Tiny Hearts Appeal launches signed Ronaldo shirt auction

Barnsley Hospital Charity’s Tiny Hearts Appeal is to benefit from a framed Ronaldo shirt, signed by the Real Madrid player which has been kindly donated by local businessman Derek Carpenter. The charity will be auctioning the item through Ebay in November.

Although the current Neonatal Unit at Barnsley Hospital which provides special care to babies is fit for purpose, safe and provides quality care, the Tiny Hearts Appeal is a campaign which aims to raise £1 million to support the relocation and development of a brand new, state of the art Neonatal Unit, which will be situated alongside the Barnsley Birthing Centre. The new unit will enable the care team to adapt to each individual baby and their complex needs much more fluidly than before.

The item was kindly donated by well-known Barnsley businessman Derek Carpenter and is bound to attract a huge amount of Interest from football fans around the world. Former Barnsley FC goalkeeper Luke Steele has already made an enquiry on Twitter!

Derek says of how he came about the shirt:

“It’s no credit to me really. A colleague won it at a business event. One of his children had received neonatal care at an anxious time in his family’s life and I introduced him to the Tiny Hearts Appeal. He agreed it was a worthy cause and agreed to release the shirt for auction. “

The fantastic donation is now in the hands of the charity, and everyone now hopes the keen interest that already exists will result in a good outcome for the Tiny Hearts Appeal.”

The final, winning bid announcement will coincide with an annual celebration for World Prematurity Day.

Steve Wragg, Chairman of Barnsley Hospital Charity said:

“This is absolutely fantastic news and we’re really grateful to Derek for thinking about the Tiny Hearts Appeal. We look forward to seeing how well the auction goes and hope that it generates lots of interest.”

Zombie Run announcement

Barnsley Hospital Charity’s Zombie Run will unfortunately not be taking place this year. Due to a very successful Rainbow Run, as well as our amazing capital appeal for the Tiny Hearts, we felt a much more sustained focus on these would be the best approach for this calendar year.

However we already have a date booked for next year’s Zombie Run to fit in with Halloween and we are currently working on a brand new events calendar for the new year. The Zombie Run next year will be bigger and better than in previous years, and we will be releasing information on this shortly so watch this space. We do apologise to those who wanted to take part and for any inconvenience.

Outreach Centre’s Gift of Love to Barnsley Hospital’s Neonatal Unit

The Christian Outreach Centre, based at Darton, Barnsley attended the Neonatal Unit at Barnsley Hospital on Tuesday 13 October to donate gifts of love to the unit.

Generous members of the outreach centre kindly helped Jane by donating brand new, unopened gifts of clothes, nappies, blankets and lots more for babies aged 0 to 3 months to the Neonatal Unit. Jane Hen, Jeff Baxter, Pastor of the Christian Centre and his wife Lillian Baxter presented the gifts to Steve Wragg, Chairman of Barnsley Hospital Charity and Ben Dockerill from the Neonatal Unit.

Jane Hen, organiser of the charitable event says:

“I decided to organise the events because when my son was born in 2003 he was transferred to Manchester with respiratory arrest. When we arrived, although they were absolutely fantastic, and provided us with some items to help us, they were unable to provide us with anything new.

Obviously we were extremely grateful for what we did receive at the time but it just highlighted that hospital’s need a little extra help in providing for the unplanned. That’s why I decided to bring some of the love from inside the church out into the community and purchase items that I knew would make a real difference. I thought it would help new parents during these often difficult times and help prepare them for the unplanned.”

The gifts were donated and will be stored on the Neonatal Unit to help support babies and their parents.

Steve Wragg, Chairman of Barnsley Hospital Charity says:

“This is such a lovely, thoughtful thing to do. These little things can often be overlooked and we’re extremely grateful to Jane and all those from the Christian Outreach Centre who donated something to the worthy cause. Huge thanks from everyone here at the unit and the charity.”

The centre plan to do this on an ongoing basis so if you’d like to contribute, please contact Jane on jhen0212@aol.com.

If you’d like to support the Neonatal Unit with any fundraising, or make a donation, you can contact the charity office on 01226 431650.

Woman takes on Nidderdale Sprint Triathlon in aid of Barnsley’s babies

runningBarnsley Hospital Charity’s Tiny Hearts Appeal received a generous donation after a Yorkshire woman took part in the Nidderdale Sprint Triathlon on Saturday 12 September, raising in excess of £600 for the charity, which far exceeded her personal target of £200.

Helen Apperley of Pateley Bridge in North Yorkshire took part in the challenge which requires physical strength and endurance, as a way of giving back to Barnsley Hospital’s Neonatal Unit for the care given when her baby daughter was born there. To complete the challenge, she had to swim 400m, cycle 20k and run 5k.

Helen says:

“Our daughter Georgie was born and taken care of for several months when she made an unexpected early arrival and I saw that they were raising funds to improve the facilities. It seemed fitting therefore that any money I raised should go to them.

“Georgie is now 6, and a healthy, feisty little girl – thank you Barnsley for giving her the best possible start in life.”

Helen continues:

“Those who know me know that fitness fanaticism is not my forte! It was therefore with some trepidation (and perhaps after a glass of wine) that I agreed at Christmas to take part in a Triathlon. It all seemed an age away… plenty of time to buy all the new gear and at least look the part!

“In the interim, I managed to do a range of training, sufficient at least that I was able to make it around the course, although not enough to win any prizes.

“The atmosphere on the day was great, everyone encouraging other competitors to keep on going and make it through. It was a great sense of achievement.”

The Tiny Hearts Appeal is a campaign administered by Barnsley Hospital Charity which aims to raise £1 million to support the development of a brand new, state of the art Neonatal Unit at Barnsley Hospital, which will be situated alongside the Barnsley Birthing Centre. The new unit will enable the care team to adapt to each individual baby and their complex needs much more fluidly than before.

Steve Wragg, Chairman of Barnsley Hospital Charity says:

“It’s fantastic that Helen took part in this challenge. I understand how difficult it can be and daunting when you take on a challenge that you wouldn’t normally do. To then go on and triple her target is absolutely brilliant so well done.

The money raised is a great contribution to the appeal and will make a real difference.”
